In the US, Apple has been awarded a patent that describes a display system that allows multiple viewers to view projected 3D images without any need for special glasses. The system claims to provide high quality viewing for the viewers regardless of where they might be sitting.
The patent describes the use of a rippled screen to create an autostereoscopic projection system. This means that different images are projected to each eye, and thus there should be no need for special glasses.
The system tracks the viewer’s eyes and calculates their position in space. It then projects each pixel of the stereoscopic images to a precise spot on one of the screen’s ripples, reflecting it into one or other of the viewer’s eyes.
