August 2, 2009 – The Smoking Show

We all know that modern technology tries to revolutionise everything it touches, but would you believe that the next thing set to change in your life might just be the humble cigarette.

Yes, while people continue smoking while others give it up, some people are trying to modernise it all with the help of the electronic cigarette, a gadget that still gives you the nicotine fix without releasing the smoke that can drive people insane.

We’ve reviewed it once on The Gadget Grill and in this show, we’ll look at it again because it appeared in the news this week which makes it friendly fodder.

Plus we have a ton of news. Seriously, it’s a ridiculous amount of news including very dirty keyboards (mrrooowww!), small video cameras and even smaller DVD burners, Windows 7 activation cracked, problems with Mac screens, and are you a pirate?

All that and more including numerous jokes and the occasional rant on this Gadget Grill.

Leigh’s note: Apologies for the lateness of this podcast. This has been a weird week. Should return to the regular timetable of a Monday or Tuesday release next episode, folks.

Play

Everything in tonight’s show was inspired by the humble cigarette. Yes, from smoke to fire to needing a lung, this is what we played.

  1. Eskimo Joe – Smoke (from “A Song Is A City”)
  2. Rufus Wainwright – Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk (from “Poses”)
  3. Nigel Kennedy – Fire (from “The Kennedy Experience”)
  4. Coleman Hawkins – Smoke Gets In Your Eyes (from “Playboy Jazz After Dark, Vol. 2”)
  5. Radiohead – My Iron Lung (from “The Best Of”)

Next week, we head into the future to find out…

WILL COMPUTERS DESTROY US ALL?!

If it sounds a little like something from a 50s science-fiction movie, you won’t want to miss this show. See you then.
