Earlier this week Intel announced that they have developed a method to move data around within our electronic devices using laser beams to transmit light instead of copper wire and electrons. They have developed a research prototype that can move more data over longer distances using optical data connections.
This technology has the potential to move data at up to 50 gigabits per second, and that has significant implications in many areas of computer design. Computers will no longer need to be designed as a single box containing all of the components, grouped together. Instead, they can be built as more modular pieces, and in a corporate environment, distributed over an entire campus.
Intel’s Press Release has the details.
