The events that have occurred in Japan over the last few days have been truly mammoth. A major earthquake, which triggered a tsunami, have just been the beginning. The proximity of several nuclear power plants to the epicenter has only added to the mix.
But CNN is reporting that Japan has actually, and measurably, moved as a result of this earthquake.
It has been reported that at least on GPS station has moved about 8 feet, and Kenneth Hudnut, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), is reported as confirming that he’s seen maps that show a similar amount of movement in the land mass.
And in Italy, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology has estimated that the 8.9-magnitude earthquake has resulted in shifting the earth on its axis by nearly 4 inches.
